Indigenous People

Indigenous people face disadvantage on numerous fronts, disproportionate to non-Indigenous people and at all stages of life. Health, education and employment are three social indicators that Indigenous young people fare particularly poorly in.

  • The average life expectancy of Indigenous Australians is around 11 years shorter than non-Indigenous Australians.
  • Rates of overweight and obesity have steadily increased for Indigenous Australians in the last decade. Indigenous Australians are nearly twice as likely to be obese as non-Indigenous Australians.
  • Indigenous children are twice as likely to die before the age of five as non-Indigenous children.
  • Indigenous children are less likely to be enrolled in primary school than non-indigenous children.
  • The employment rate for Indigenous people is much lower than non-Indigenous people.

A holistic model of service provision that acknowledges past injustices and builds on individual and community strengths is necessary to help address the disparities that exist between Indigenous and non –Indigenous Australians.
