What if an earthquake hit Perth? What would your organisation do?

This was the scenario for a recent international disaster response exercise. In the event of a major disaster, international agencies would be available to fill gaps if interstate emergency responders were already over-stretched. But would your organisation be one needing help? Or would you be stepping up your provision of help? This is what disaster resilience is all about. Planning ensures you can continue to meet the needs of your clients, especially those most at risk in times of disaster. Join the final Perth metro Disaster Planning for Community Organisations workshop Friday 22 June. It's not too late to register. Don’t wait till it’s too late to be prepared.

Australian Local Government Association supports increase to Newstart

Delegates from local councils across Australia supported a motion at their national conference yesterday (19 June) for the federal government to increase the rate of Newstart, Youth Allowance and related payments as a matter of urgency. ALGA joins 14 individual councils from Western Australia, South Australia, and Victoria, who all support the increase.

Homelessnes Week 2018: Event Grants available now

Homelessness Week is a national week to raise awareness about homelessness in our community, from Monday 6 August - Sunday 12 August. This year's theme is ‘There’s always something you can do' and will focus on actions people can take that will end homelessness, while supporting people who are currently experiencing homelessness. Shelter WA has received funding from Lotterywest and the Department of Communities to host Homelessness Week in WA, and administer $500 grants for organisations to raise awareness. Email [email protected] for a grant application pack.

Social Impact Summit at UWA Business School

The Social Impact Summit, hosted by the Centre for Social Impact UWA, is the highlight of the Social Impact Festival 2018. Bringing together aspiring and experienced leaders of social change and innovation across community, academia, government, and business sectors, the 2 day Summit will explore social innovation, co-design, systems thinking, social enterprise, and measuring impact. It moves beyond just talking – it is a carefully designed journey for learning and co-creating our future together. Don't miss out!

Have your say on the Local Government Act Review

Community sector representatives have an opportunity to shape the future role of local government through a series of workshops being used to guide consultations on the reform of the Local Government Act. Integrated Planning and Community Engagement are the two that are of particular importance to the community sector, and the initial commitment is for participation in a one-day workshop. Expressions of interest close on Friday 22 June.

Housing Aspriations Research Project opportunity

Are you, or do you know someone who is aged 18+ and can take part in a 30-45 minute ethical and confidential telephone interview and receive a $50 voucher? Swinburne and Curtin University researchers are seeking to include the voice of lived experience in a national housing research about the housing choices, options, and local pressures. Participants are sought in WA who are living with medium to low incomes. Email [email protected] (include your name, best contact method, and local area) and researchers will get in touch.

Victorian Red Tape Reduction - an option for WA?

The Victorian Government has dropped the requirement for community organisations registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission to provide annual reports to both State and Federal agencies. Now they will only have to report to ACNC. Is the duplication of reporting an issue here in WA? Does it mean extra work for your organisation? Do you want Community Employers WA and WACOSS to take it up as a local priority to reduce red tape? Email your view to [email protected].

Cahoots seeking bigger premises

Cahoots is an innovative, agile, disability services provider, looking to lease shared office space with another community sector organisation. The move would ideally happen prior to November 2018, and the small team requires between 150 - 170 square meters of office space. Some staff parking for staff and clients when they visit would be fantastic. If you have a space to share, or know of someone looking for a tenant, please contact Bev Wotzko: [email protected] or 9240 6928 to discuss a potential collaboration.

Grandparent carer research project

Do you know any grandparents who are full time carers? Wanslea is conducting research into the impact of being a grandparent carer, from an individual, service provider, policy, and advocacy perspective. Grandparent care is the fastest growing form of out-of-home care. The situation is due to a range of social factors, including parental substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration, child abuse, and neglect. This research will explore the impact of the caring role on grandparents, and identify and support their needs, so that services and policies can support them.
