National Homelessness Week 2018 – join in an event or activity
Homelessness Week is a national week of events to raise awareness about homelessness in our community, from Monday 6 August to Sunday 12 August. The theme for Homelessness Week in WA this year is, ‘There’s always something you can do.’ This focuses on the things people can do to end homelessness, while supporting people experiencing homelessness.

ACOSS releases Inequality Report
The Australian Council of Social Service has released their latest report, Inequality in Australia 2018. Some of the most startling statistics highlight that someone in the highest 20% of the income scale lives in a household with five times as much income as someone in the lowest 20% of the income scale. Even more extreme, someone in the highest 1% of the income scale lives in a household with an average weekly income that is 26 times the income of someone in the lowest 5% of the income scale.

Create Ranger Parks WA outback photo competition
Do you love taking photos in the Outback and want to win $1000?
Entries are open for The Heart of Our Outback – Landscape and Nature Photography Prize, presented by Create Ranger Parks with the support of the WA Photographic Federation.
The competition will showcase the unique landscapes and natural beauty of WA’s Pilbara, Mid West and Gascoyne.
Create Ranger Parks is a community driven proposal to ensure protection for 5 million hectares of WA’s remarkable Outback heart.
Enter your best landscape and nature images to help inspire all Western Australians and encourage the State Government to create a new network of protected areas, managed by Indigenous rangers. Entries open until Sunday 5 August.

Container Deposit Scheme Social Enterprise Workshop
The Western Australian Government is introducing a state-wide container deposit scheme which is expected to start in 2020.
The workshop, 1.00pm-4.30pm, Friday 24 August 2018, will provide an introduction to the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS), discuss opportunities presented by the CDS for social enterprises in WA, how social enterprises have been involved in similar schemes interstate, and practical considerations for participation by social enterprises.

Supporting Communities Forum update
The Supporting Communities Forum was established in late 2017 to support the implementation of the State Government’s Supporting Communities policy which is focused on improving the quality of services provided to vulnerable Western Australians. City of Vincent opportunity for LGBTQI+ artists
The City of Vincent have an opportunity for LGBTQI+ artists. Four artists are sought to paint Traffic Control Boxes for Pride month. Successful artists will be paid $500 for their work. Read more on the City of Vincent Website.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day
Saturday 4 August marks the 30th anniversary since it was first celebrated in 1988. The national day is a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to celebrate the strengths and culture of their children, and an opportunity for all Australians to show their support for Aboriginal children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that community, culture and family play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

WA Play Strategy
Early Childhood Australia, the key advocacy organisation for children from birth to eight years of age, is leading a campaign in Western Australia to raise public awareness on the importance of play, and is advocating for a State government-led WA Play Strategy to reinstate young children's right to learn through play in the community and in particular in their early years.

Young People's Experience of Homelessness - Mission Australia survey
Mission Australia has released the findings of the 2017 survey. The research analysed the responses of over 20,000 young people aged 15-19, and found that 1 in 6 young people surveyed have experienced homelessness. The report gives us an insight into the scale of youth homelessness in Australia, a better understanding of who these young people are and how they are impacted by homelessness, and how their experiences differ from those who haven't experienced homelessness.

Nominations open for the Human Rights Awards
The Human Rights award recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of individuals, organisations and businesses to the field of human rights each year. There are nine awards categories. Nominations are open until Sunday 5 August.

MyHealthRecord opt out period commenced
In 2018, every Australian will get a My Health Record. If you decide that you don't want a record, you have between 16 July - 15 October 2018 to opt out. ACOSS have released a media release welcoming the Federal Government's recent commitment to protect the privacy of people with a MyHealthRecord. Read the ACOSS media release here.

2018 ACOSS National Conference
The 2018 ACOSS “Rise to the Challenge” National Conference will be held at the SMC Conference and Function Centre, 66 Goulburn St, Sydney on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 October. The 2018 ACOSS “Rise to the Challenge” National Conference has been designed not only to explore these in order to shape and inform, but also to equip participants to better confront and address these challenges.

WA Youth Award nominations now open
The WA Youth Awards were established in 1999 to recognise West Australians aged 12 to 25 years for their contributions to the community, as well as outstanding youth groups and organisations that serve and support the State’s young people.
Nominations are now open and will close on Wednesday, 6 September 2018, with the WA Youth Awards to be presented on Friday, 12 October 2018 at the State Theatre Centre Perth.

VCOSS Governance Healthcheck
The Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) has launched a free online tool to help NFPs assess their governance and financial health. The VCOSS Governance Healthcheck asks participants to answer a series of questions about how their board and organisation functions. Results are then analysed and users given tailored tips and recommendations to help strengthen their organisation.

Child Safe Organisations - Perth Seminars
The recent release of the WA Government's response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has highlighted the need for all organisations to have secure child safe practices and principles. Child Safe Organisation seminars will be held in August and September, in Subiaco. The free whole-day seminars coach organisations on how to create a safe environment, where children feel comfortable.

Pilbara Creative and Cultural Forum - Open Call for presenters
The Pilbara Development Commission and FORM have recently announced the Pilbara Creative and Cultural Forum, taking place in Newman, 21-22 September 2018. Local success stories are being sought to present projects as case studies at the Forum. Applications for Open Call presenters are now open. Share your projects, experiences and ideas to inform ways the Pilbara might succeed in the future.
