National survey: impact of tenancy laws on women & children escaping violence
The South Australian Department of Social Services has contracted a group of researchers from the University of South Australia, to conduct research that aims to better understand the impact of tenancy laws on women and children escaping family and domestic violence. The study will provide recommendations to the government on how residential tenancy laws might work better to improve outcomes for women and children. Women who have experienced family and domestic violence, and had trouble trying to rent a property, are encouraged to take part in the survey.

Anti-Poverty Week Launch - Free Event
WACOSS, in conjunction with Youth Affairs Council of WA (YACWA) and the Anti-Poverty Week facilitating committee, are launching Anti-Poverty Week at a morning event at 7:45am, Friday 12 October, at the State Theatre, corner of Roe and William street, Perth. The event coincides with the YACWA conference, Un-Fair Ground 2018. The Hon. Simone McGurk will speak at the event, as well as young people who will talk to their experiences of poverty.

Anti-Poverty Week Networking Breakfast
An opportunity for businesses and the social sector to discuss the impacts of poverty on the lives of children and young people. Join the event to see guest speaker and internationally-renowned academic, Professor Donna Cross, Head of Health Promotion and Education at the Telethon Kids Institute and Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Western Australia. The community sector is encouraged to bring a colleague from the private, community or business sector to this event.

Pregnancy warning labels on alcohol
On October 11, Australian and New Zealand Food Ministers will meet to decide if alcohol products should carry a mandatory warning label on the harms caused during pregnancy. To have your say on the matter, make sure you follow the links to support the campaign and share on social media.

Have your say on 10-Year Homelessness Strategy
Organisations and individuals can have their input on homelessness in Western Australia, as part of upcoming consultation sessions. Feedback will inform the development of the 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness (the Strategy). Led by the Department of Communities, the Strategy will be a whole-of-community plan to tackle homelessness in WA. The remaining consultation session is in Joondalup on Thursday 11 October.

BCEC report on electricity tariff structures
Last week the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre (BCEC) released the report Power Plans for Electricity and the impact of tariff structure changes on energy-vulnerable households. The panel discussion focused on the findings of the report and the trial of an alternate energy pricing product in northern WA. The report found that over 80 per cent of customers placed in a vulnerable situation feel very or somewhat anxious about high summer bills.

Consumer Protection Awards 2019 - nominations open
The Consumer Protection Awards provides an opportunity to reward and recognise the achievements of individuals, non-government organisations, businesses, local governments, journalists and media outlets that have increased awareness of consumer issues, provided support for disadvantaged consumers or contributed to injury prevention for children. Potential nominees may have helped consumers with tenancy matters, scam prevention, debt management or understanding contracts. Nominations are open until Friday 16 November.

Local Government Act review
Community sector organisations may be interested in participating in the Local Government Act review, to have your say on issues like community engagement and integrated planning. Surveys will be open until 31 March 2019.

Everyone can be an advocate - download the Advocacy Toolkit
Download the Advocacy Toolkit, recently produced and designed by WACOSS and the DropIN Solutions team. The toolkit is divided into sections with tips and templates on writing letters to government, how to write and distribute media releases, and ideas for setting up face-to-face meetings with politicians. The toolkit is a resource to enable and empower anyone to be an advocate for change. Hard copies can be provided on request.

HESTA community sector award finalists announced
Congratulations to the Western Australian finalists announced in the HESTA community sector awards. WACOSS member Anglicare WA, along with the Youth Involvement Council in South Hedland, VisAbility (ROAM Project Team) in Victoria Park, and Noelene Jorgesen, of One Tree Community Services in Laverton, have been acknowledged. Winners will be announced at the award ceremony on Monday 29 October in Sydney.
